house & sea:
Jewel Cafe at
One Raffles Place
ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN

Jewel Coffee was looking to expand its franchise with an island unit located at One Raffles Place (B1). The sute had multiple
physical constraints, including low headroom, narrow pedestrian corridors and close proximity to its neighboring units.
The solution was to design the cafe to invoke the feeling of approaching a "house" that is surrounded by "sea". The "house" contained the cafe’s front and back of house, while the "sea" represented the dine-in areas. This concept was based on the client’s needs and the day-to-day functions of a cafe. In addition, materiality was considered in creating both a sense of separation and connection between the two “spaces”.
